Architectural Design Manager

Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Director of Housing & Hospitality Service Physical Plant and Project Management, the Architectural Design Manager will have management responsibility for planning, staffing, organizing, supervising, and controlling all internal design services provided by Housing Project Management. Provide oversight and guidance to staff professionals for planning, renovation and new construction projects and evaluate their performance; frequent review of and travel to work sites using a university vehicle, requiring ability to climb ladders, walk and work in various rough graded sites, and lifting/lowering of weighted objects. Serve as the executive architect who has professional signatory authority on all construction documents developed by staff professionals.

Develop business services model and best practices for internal architectural services including computer aided drafting (CAD) protocols, design standards, construction document formatting, and work monitoring/control systems.

Serve as the department’s liaison with governing agencies including Fire Marshal, Environment Health and Safety, Campus Architect, Campus Building Official and other Planning and Design personnel at Capital Programs.

Works independently, but meets regularly with Senior Director to ensure overall department goals and objectives are being met.

Job Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited professional program in Architecture or related field. Master’s degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Minimum of ten years of professional experience in design and building industry in private practice, corporate and /or institutional settings, preferably with universities, colleges, or school systems.
Required

Licensed Architect in California.

Demonstrated record of successful planning, budgeting, financial analysis and fiscal management, including skill in budget preparation, analysis and controlling costs of multiple, multi-million dollar budgets.

Skill in formatting and analyzing statistically based data and financial reports.
Required

Ability to handle diverse and conflicting constituent needs. Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively and tactfully with diverse departments/University personnel at various levels, and with the public.

Ability to mediate between contending parties and affect a successful resolution of differences using appropriate conflict management techniques.

Skill and knowledge in employee development, including the ability to develop and implement effective training and recognition programs. Demonstrated skill in management and supervision of technical, administrative, service, and student personnel.

Skill with Network based Personal Computing software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Includes experience with data based applications.

Ability to drive a University Vehicle to travel to various offsite work locations.

Ability to stand, climb, stoop, push, pull and crouch for extended periods of time, as required to complete job assignments. Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds with assistance.

Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its infrastructure, rules, regulations, policies and short and long range strategic building plans.

Advanced project management skills to effectively manage highly complex projects, or highly specialized and critical project component.

Advanced knowledge of building and construction, design, construction contract administration and California Building Codes, including advanced understanding of industry practices, or deep expertise in a highly specialized and critical discipline.
