Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Department Manager and the Supervisor, incumbent is responsible for providing support to properties managed by UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services. The incumbent is primarily responsible for General Carpentry for preventative and predictive maintenance programs and repairs, installation of new work as directed. This position is also responsible for assisting the manager as required to supervise work of outside contractors to ensure that all work is performed in a cost effective manner with special consideration to customer service and regularly changing priorities. Incumbent typically performs the work of Carpenter, in addition to transmitting orders and explaining tasks to co-workers and performs record keeping and ordering functions.

Job Qualifications

1. Skill in setting priorities, which accurately reflects relative importance of pending facility maintenance repairs.

2. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff members, subordinates, managers and administrators.
Required

3. Working knowledge of Class A construction, UBC, OSHA, fire codes, construction procedures and ADA requirements (ADA/Fire hardware and installation).

4. Skill in basic mathematics to calculate layouts and offsets and provide accurate cost calculations.

5. Working knowledge of standard safety practices and equipment used related to the Carpenter’s trade.

6. Skill in reading and interpreting architectural drawings and construction specifications.

7. Ability to communicate effectively through written reports and oral presentations.

8. Working knowledge of U.L. Fire Stopping.
Required

9. Ability to use trade-related hand/power tools and instruments in an efficient and effective manner.
Required

10. Ability to install metal stud and drywall partitions, suspended ceiling, fiberglass reinforced paneling, trim work, laminate, build and install shelving and other woodwork.

11. Skill in modifying and/or adapting designs, procedures or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications.

12. Ability to troubleshoot problems in structural woodwork.

13. Satisfactory completion of a certified 4 year trade related apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and education.

14. Skill in speaking and understanding English to communicate and comprehend ideas and/or information.

15. Skill in basic drafting and design technique methods.
Required

16. Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds from floor to waist high and Rotate upper torso. Ability to lift material and parts, up to 50 pounds from shoulder to above head while standing on a ladder. Ability to Stand, stoop, push, pull and crouch for extended periods as required to complete job assignments.

17. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.

18. Ability to drive a pick-up truck and/or van.

19. Skill with Network based Personal Computing software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Preferred

20. Ability to work under adverse conditions such as humid weather and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures, and dirty and noisy conditions.

21. Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
