Housing Safety Coordinator
Job Description
This position will serve as the workplace safety specialist for UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services (H&HS) – Rooms Division and provide support to appointed safety managers in other H&HS departments.
This position is responsible for the development, management, and support of safety initiatives and programs to prevent and reduce workplace injuries and accidents and to improve departmental safety awareness, in an effort to create a more safe and secure workplace environment.
This position also leads the department’s risk assessment programs to identify and mitigate community hazards to eliminate liability exposure. Additionally, in collaboration with campus EH&S and Insurance and Risk Management (IRM), work as a team to support campus goals and initiatives of reducing workplace injuries.
Major duties include reviewing workplace injuries, investigating workplace accidents, job shadowing routine tasks, generating Job Safety Analysis (JSA), create, review and deliver safety communication pieces and metrics to all levels of team members from line staff to senior management. Ensure projects/programs are sustained to maintain safety initiatives in the workplace.
Job Qualifications
Demonstrated working experience with database programs, spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, and calendar. Required
Knowledge of principles of occupational safety and health gained from a college level educational background or equivalent work experience and regulatory compliance experience (e.g. CAL/OSHA, NFPA, or EPA), and have the ability to apply this understanding to the tasks of accident prevention, risk management and hazard recognition. Required
Skill in analyzing operating procedures and data to recommend necessary changes or trends consistent with accepted analytical practices. Required
Ability to analyze and define administrative and technical problems, identifying relevant factors, recognizing alternatives and formulating conclusions. Required
Organizational skills to manage workflow and establish a harmonious and productive environment. Required
Ability to set goals and priorities, which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities, when faced with fluctuating workloads, pressure of deadlines and competing requirements. Required
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, coworkers, and other University personnel and interact diplomatically with a diversified public. Required
Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite products. Required
Working knowledge of federal, state and local health and safety codes to access, and provide accurate information to departments. Required
Ability to learn concepts quickly and to apply this knowledge to other job functions. Required
Ability to perform duties independently and with a great degree of accuracy, while meeting established deadlines. Required
Skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature. Required
Ability to accept equivocal circumstances and take action where answers to a problem are not readily apparent. Required

Extensive knowledge of the use of personal protective equipment. Ability to wear personal protective equipment. Required
Ability to analyze complex technical data and make recommendations based on the data. Required
Ability to report to work on time as assigned and to dress professionally. Required
Ability to communicate in Spanish. Preferred
Board of Certified Safety Professional – Associate Safety Professional? (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional? (CSP) Certification. Preferred
Must have and maintain a valid California Driver’s License in order to drive a University vehicle. Required
