Lead Electrician
Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Department Manager and the Supervisor, incumbent is responsible for providing support to properties managed by UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services. The Lead Electrician will oversee and coordinate the work of the Electricians and Facilities Mechanics who are responsible for maintaining all electrical equipment such as motors, magnetic starters, contactors, electrified panic hardware, strikes, latch, hinges including servicing and troubleshooting of “Autocall/Grinnell”, “Pyrotronics/Siemens” fire alarm equipment; and “Blackboard” Access Control Systems; assisting with replacing air conditioning systems, drive belts, motor sleeves and pulleys. Review and coordinate daily schedules and work; interface with client. Conduct job site assessment and evaluation; resolve project problems and coordinate outages. Maintain cleanliness of equipment and electrical rooms. Maintain accurate inventory of security system equipment and parts. Prepare accurate written reports and maintenance records. The incumbent will need to operate a university vehicle to transport equipment and complete work orders and repairs throughout the campus. Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Working knowledge of a variety of complicated electrical/electro-mechanical systems and equipment and solid state controlled electrical devices.
Required
Skill in working with both digital and analog electrical devices and systems.
Required
General knowledge of all types of electrical fittings and conduit bending. Ability to install various types flex and conduits.
Required
Working knowledge of various types of high intensity discharge lamps, ballasts and related wiring methods. Ability to wire control circuits from schematics.
Required
Ability to correctly and skillfully operate the various standard tools and equipment of the electrical trade, e.g.,voltage tester, amp meter, multi meter, drill motors, roto hammer, threading machine and soldering iron, etc.

Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems and equipment for malfunctions, signs of damage, deterioration or need for adjustment.

Working knowledge of basic electrical theory (Ohms Law) including AC and DC systems applications.
Required
Satisfactory completion of a 4 year electrician apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and education. Possession of a California General Electrician Certificate.

Ability to read, interpret and understand technical language in specifications, schematics and blueprints.
Required
Skill in modifying and/ or adapting designs, procedures or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications.
Required
Skill in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing 4 digit numbers and fractions in order to calculate layouts and offsets, and provide accurate cost calculations. Skill in estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish tasks.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, managers, subordinates, students residents, guests and contractors. Ability to provide direction to Electricians, Facilities Workers and/or Facilities Mechanics and to train Apprentices.

Oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise and grammatically correct information.

Skill in writing simple English phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend.

Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.

Working knowledge of the standard electrical safety practices and methods.

Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA and ADA requirements as it relate to function. Ability to recognize discrepancies if ADA and Fire/Life/Safety codes at each job location and report to supervisor.

Ability to control and troubleshoot Autocall/Grinnell, Pyrotronics/Siemens fire alarm systems and reporting devices.

Ability to maintain, install, service, troubleshoot Blackboard Optim 9000 access control system equipment, activity, security monitor, wedge type readers and multiplexers.

Ability to install, service and repair access control electronic hardware and control devices and wiring. (Card readers, control boards, power supplies, magnetic door contacts, electric latch, strikes and transfer hinges).

Ability to stand, crawl, walk and stoop; push, pull and lift & lower objects weighing up to 50 lbs from floor to waist high and rotate upper torso. Ability to lift material and parts, up to 50 pounds, from shoulder to above head while standing on a ladder. Ability to work in dirty and noisy conditions, in wet or humid weather, and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures.

Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License. Ability to drive a truck or other light vehicle in the course of duties.
