Lead Stationary Operating Engineer

Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Department Manager and the Supervisor, incumbent is responsible for providing support to properties managed by UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services. The Lead Stationary Operating Engineer is primarily responsible for Food Service Support, HVAC, Physical Plant, preventative and predictive maintenance programs. Incumbent typically performs the work of Stationary Operating Engineer, in addition to transmitting orders and explaining tasks to co-workers and performs record keeping and ordering functions. Assist the manager as required to supervise work of outside contractors to ensure the all work is performed in a cost effective manner with special consideration for building occupants and regularly changing priorities.

Job Qualifications

  • Skill in scheduling and implementing preventive maintenance of equipment. (Required)
  • Ability to evaluate extent of repair, plan appropriate corrective measures, and determine tools and materials required completing the repair. (Required)
  • Ability to modify, adjust and repair all major and auxiliary equipment (e.g. chillers, a/c units, water treatment equipment etc.) for efficient and economical operation. (Required)
  • Skill in reading and interpreting HVAC, electrical, plumbing, architectural drawings, construction drawings and specifications and scope of work. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of function, operation and servicing of various HVAC, Refrigeration, and Food Service equipment and utility distribution systems. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of function, operation, repair and service procedures for Low Pressure Steam Boilers, Hot Water Boilers, and related distribution systems, and Food Service equipment. (Required)
  • Ability in preparing engineering drawings and sketches. (Required)
  • Knowledge of fire, safety and building codes. (Required)
  • Ability in estimating time and material requirement for major projects. (Required)
  • Ability to use trade-relate hand/power tools and instruments in an efficient and effective manner. (Required)
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification on proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials such as asbestos and CFC’s. (Required)
  • Skill in analyzing information concerning the efficient and economical operation of HVAC, Refrigeration and Food Service equipment, and make reports and recommendations. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of and skill in plumbing, electrical, heating and ventilation, air conditioning equipment and repairs. Knowledge of power distribution systems. (Required)
  • Skill in basic drafting and design technique methods and procedures used in the areas of electrical, mechanical, architectural and civil engineering. (Required)
  • Ability to operate, maintain, make adjustments and repair Building Automation Systems and Energy Management Systems. (Required)
  • Skill and knowledge in establishing and implementing energy conservation programs for On Campus Housing. (Required)
  • Skill in setting priorities, which accurately reflects relative importance of pending facility maintenance repairs. (Required)
  • Skill in speaking and understanding English to communicate and comprehend ideas and/or information; including communicating effectively through written reports and oral presentations. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff members, subordinates, managers and administrators. (Required)
  • Skill in coordinating and supervising maintenance staff including delegating responsibility, training and evaluating performance. (Required)
  • Ability to stand, climb, stoop, push, pull, and crouch for extended periods of time, as required to complete job assignments. Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds from floor to waist high and rotate upper torso. Ability to lift material and parts, up to 50 pounds from shoulder to above head while standing on a ladder to complete job assignments. (Required)
  • Ability to drive a pick-up truck and/or van. Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License. (Required)
  • Skill with Network based Personal Computing software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, Building Automation System and Maintenance & Work Order Tracking System. (Required)
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions such as humid weather and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures, and dirty and noisy conditions. (Required)
