Job Description

The department currently operates within a $345M operating budget, employs approximately 1,850 FTE (2,500 team members) covered by MSP, PSS, Skilled Crafts, Clerical and Service bargaining unit agreements. H&H is responsible for maintaining and enhancing more than 120 stand-alone structures and landscape incorporating 9.8 million gross square feet. Currently, H&H provides room and board accommodations to approximately 15,000 single undergraduates, and 5,200 graduate student families, single graduates, upper division undergraduates, faculty and postdoctoral scholars. In addition, H&HS is responsible for the UCLA Luskin Conference and Guest Center, a 254-room hotel on campus; UCLA Conference Center and Bruin Woods Family Resort located in Lake Arrowhead; the 61-room UCLA Guest House located on campus; UCLA Vending Services; UCLA Catering, and the UCLA Community Housing Office, which provides services to the campus community-at-large.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Housing Maintenance, with a dotted line report to the UCLA Chief Sustainability Officer, the Sustainability Manager will develop, coordinate, administer, and maintain sustainability-related programs and policies within Housing & Hospitality (H&H) geared toward achieving buy-in and habit transformation from residents and team members. Responsibilities will include acting as a catalyst for activities and commitment to sustainability by developing and implementing programs; identifying opportunities for continuous environmental improvements and developing and implementing programs to deliver these; promoting and coordinating the integration of environmental and sustainability initiatives into policies, rules, products, services, and operations; measuring and reporting the financial and environmental successes of implemented programs and initiatives; and connecting with and support the academic mission by engaging students and faculty in the environmental and social performance of the institution, and by using H&HS as a living laboratory. As part of the core sustainability team, the Sustainability Manager will work closely with the UCLA Chief Sustainability Officer, Deputy Chief Sustainability Officer, and other sustainability officers on campus to ensure that H&H sustainability programs and policies are integrated into a cohesive University-wide program.

Job Qualifications

Demonstrated 2 years’ experience in management of sustainability projects or practical application of sustainable best practices.
Required

Master’s degree in Environmental or Sustainability-related field or 4 years’ experience working in a sustainability-related field.
Preferred

Working knowledge of green buildings, low impact design, utility and energy
conservation, sustainable and plant-based food procurement and production, and recycling/composting programs in residential and hospitality environments.

Excellent written and oral communication skills to write, edit, and present planning documents, reports and presentations. Competency with the use of technology to communicate.

Excellent analytical skills to organize data and material to draw appropriate conclusions and make recommendations for solutions.
