Benefits Overview

Flexible & Affordable Insurance Coverage

UCLA offers an array of medical, dental, and vision plans. Eligible employees may enroll themselves, their spouses or same-sex domestic partners, and eligible children. The University pays a large portion of the monthly premium for medical insurance, and dental and vision plans are offered at no cost to employees. Most plans require a co-payment for office visits and services. Short-term disability insurance is automatically provided to UCLA employees. Employees may also purchase supplemental long-term disability insurance. Employees are also provided basic life insurance equal to their annual salary up to $50,000. Employees may purchase additional life and dependent life insurance coverage at group rates during specific periods of eligibility.

Retirement Benefits

The University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP) is provided to eligible employees. It provides monthly payments upon retirement, survivor and disability income, and a basic death benefit. Participants become vested after five years of qualifying service in a career position. Pension amount is determined by retirement age, UCRP years of service, and one’s highest average salary in any consecutive 36-month period. It’s like getting a paycheck upon retirement for the rest of your life!

Three Weeks of Vacation

Full-time employees start by earning about three weeks of paid vacation per year. For part-time employees, the hours earned are prorated. The amount of vacation earned increases to a maximum of five weeks per year based upon years of service with the University and/or State of California.

Twelve Days of Sick Leave

Employees earn an average of 12 days of sick leave per year. For part-time employees, the hours are prorated. Sick leave hours roll over from year to year and there is no limit on the amount of sick leave that can be accumulated. Upon retirement from the University, unused sick leave hours can be converted to additional “years of service” resulting in higher pension benefits.

Paid Holidays

The University observes and pays employees for an average of 13 holiday-related days each year including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. For a complete list of paid holidays for the current year, please click here.
